Where are the candidates?

There quite a bit of action at the municipal level in St. John’s were there are already three candidates for mayor. Political shots have already been taken in the capital and the campaigning is off to a feisty start.

Topics :
Corner Brook

The same can’t be said elsewhere.

In Corner Brook, hardly anything has been said by members of the present council about reoffering when election time rolls around in the fall.

That’s likely to change before long.

Any candidate who wants to make an impression on voters will have to start campaigning before the summer months arrive.

Voters won’t have much interest in elections or campaigns when the sun turns hot and vacation days are beaconing.

That only leaves the few months of spring and a few short weeks in September for candidates to make their case for a seat on council.

It shouldn’t be difficult for anyone who isn’t connected with the present council to find some hot topics to catch the interest of voters.

The present seven have had a rocky tenure and they have made plenty of contentious decisions that will require explaining — and even defending.

Corner Brook voters haven’t been shy about trying new leadership at city hall and the incumbents will have to convince taxpayers they have done a good job on their behalf despite a few rough spots.

Among the hot issues waiting to be brought up is the latest hike in municipal taxes.

There hasn’t been much said in public, but property owners appear fed up with having their tax bills creep higher with each new budget. Some would say creeping is putting it mildly.

As the days grow longer, the interest in municipal government will go hotter.

Anyone who is serious about running should get his or her platform together and start gathering support.

I'm with PETER BARRY. I will never again vote for any member of the current council and definitely not the Mayor. I have never experienced such an obtuse group of individuals in my 50ish years in this City. You folks have disrespected about every group of citizens within this community, at some point in the last 3.5 years, and I predict this will become very clear on election day. I for one will not forget what has happened in this time and will be very vocal when the campaigning starts to be sure that others don't forget as well. We will be counting ipads after the election so don't get any ideas...

Dirty politics has nothing to do with whether you can govern or not. However when a politician says they don't do something they are usually contradicting themselves.

The toughest part of any politicans life is making the hard decisions. If all decisions were easy they would all be made. Every time an issue comes before council someone is most likely going to be upset with the decision. I firmly believe tha if 90% of the people were seized with the same information council has they would make the same decision. My father always said if you put the peoples' interest above your own you can't go wrong. They may not get it today but they will and you can be content in knowing you did what was right. I firmly believe that. I will let my record stand as I tuly belIeve it is in the best long term interests of Corner Brook. Good uck to anyone considering municipal politics. It is the government that is closest to the people you represent and deals with services everyone depend on every day.

" I firmly believe tha if 90% of the people were seized with the same information council has they would make the same decision." That statement simply proves how out of touch you are with 90% of the people of Corner Brook. It also proves you have not learned how bridge this gap in your term as Mayor and provides ample reason in itself, not to elect you again.

I have announced my intention to run, I do not play dirty politics when I run, I run on my record and the fact that I make decisions based on information and what's best for all the residents of Corner Brook. If that gets me elected again that's great if it doesn't I respect the decision of the residents. Good Luck to all who decide to participate in this challenging job, it is not as easy as it looks from the side lines. I found that out for myself.
