Drunk driving is a serious crime. Who knew drunk boating was too? The police, that’s who. Last week a boater was caught allegedly operating a boat while under the influence of alcohol.
Police say the crime for being drunk at the helm is just as serious as being drunk behind the wheel, and carries the same type of penalties.
Recent figures from the RCMP show that the number of drunk drivers is going down.
A recent long weekend revealed that spot checks caught no one driving under the influence. Let’s hope that the number of “Drunk boating” isn’t going up in drunk driving’s place.
Everyone loves to be out on the water during the summer.
Open liquor is not permitted on boats for a reason; to keep everyone safe.
There are children on the water, hopefully wearing life jackets. Entire families are out there, and they have a right to enjoy the water just as much as anyone partying it up.
The same common sense principals that apply to a vehicle also apply to a boat.
One misstep in common sense can result in a tragedy. Don’t drink and boat.
