Sad news this week with another report of animal cruelty with a dog shot with what appears to be a pellet gun in Cape Ray.
Police are looking for information and hope to find out who is responsible. However, as is often the case, they may not get anyone contacting them.
As the police in Port aux Basques acknowledged, there have been several of these of incidents in their jurisdiction in the past year and though not believed to be related, is still disconcerting.
What’s even more unsettling is that means there is more than one person doing it, and these people probably get some kind of a thrill out of shooting a small animal with a pellet gun.
An incident on the Port au Port Peninsula where a cat (now named Sona), was shot with pellets in both eyes and found earlier this year took a turn for the worst this week when it was discovered from a CT scan that the cat has cancer due to those injuries.
It was estimated the pellets had been lodged in the cat’s eyes for some time, perhaps several years. Sona is with people who plan to make her comfortable for the time she has left.
Thankfully the people who abuse harmless animals are not the majority, but it’s still sad those people that do can cause so much misery for animals — often abandoned cats or dogs — receive this type of treatment.
There are many people who have pets that treat them excellent.
While there are people who unintentionally hurt animals because they don’t realize what they are doing is wrong for their pet, there are others who intentionally do it, not knowing how wrong it is. But there is another category of people who fall under cruel intention and those are the worst as they actually enjoy hurting creatures. Sometimes they feel they have control over the animal, or over some inadequacy in his/her life. People in this category are likely suffering problems and really should be seeking help.
Unfortunately animals are suffering at the hands of people, and for whatever reason, whether it’s a simple matter of education or more deep-seeded psychological help, those responsible should seek assistance.
