Local opposition MHA Eddie Joyce poked the government again last week about what their plans are for the proposed regional hospital.
We aren’t much the wiser about what residents of this region can expect in the way of health care when the facility opens … whenever that may be.
The provincial government has committed hundreds of millions of dollars for replacing the crumbling building that now serves the region and have even shown some drawing about what it should look like, but there is a fear that the new hospital will be far from what was originally planned when announced by then premier Danny Williams.
The surging Liberals are trying to spread the idea that they are determined to implement a better plan for the hospital if they become the government in 2015 … but that just isn’t workable.
There has already been a series of studies done on what is need in a hospital to serve the people of this region properly and going back to square one again would delay the start of construction even further.
Years after the original announcement, not one piece of steel has risen on the site on the edge of the city and not likely to anytime soon.
The doors of this hospital were to open in 2016, then 2018 and now it’s anyone’s guess.
This replacement was needed when it was first announced ... and it’s need more so now.
Starting over just isn’t an option at this point.
