Climate change is upon us

The climate in this province seems to be changing ... and not for the better. Scientists are always quick to point out that it takes hundreds of years of observation to detect trends in climate change ... but it may be happening faster for us.

Scientists also predict that extremes in weather will continue to happen as the Earth warms — slowly but surely.

Already this summer, St. John’s is on its way to breaking a record for the most days with a temperature over 25 degrees — may already be there by now.

That record was set in 1947 … a couple  of years before the people of this province voted to join Canada and before many of us were born.

It’s been so hot many days on the west coast, people are searching for relief from the oppressive temperatures like never before.

This past winter brought another extreme.

The snow was relentless and kept falling in the Bay of Islands region.

Winter began early and stayed so late skiers were upset that Marble Mountain ski area closed  when there was plenty of snow still left on the slopes well into April.

Some recent destructive wind storms and flooding can’t be ignored. Raging wind knocked down structures and ripped roofs off buildings during a couple of incidents in Bonne Bay.

Flooding has caused damage in the Bay St. George and Corner Brook areas in recent memory.

What used to be rare is now becoming close to being the norm.

As individuals there are some small changes we can make to calm our environment, but for sure we had better be prepared for more severe weather that will only get worse and more dangerous.

"The climate in this province"...classic! I noticed the climate on my street was real bad last year. Snowbank was a foot higher in February than the year before.

Only news editors, politicians and goose stepping "believers" are certain billions of children are doomed as science has NEVER been more than their laughable 95% certain after 32 years of "research" into effects not causes of an assumed to be real crisis. Get up to date; *Occupywallstreet now does not even mention CO2 in its list of demands because of the bank-funded and corporate run carbon trading stock markets ruled by politicians. *Canada killed Y2Kyoto 2 years ago with a freely elected climate change denying prime minister and nobody cared, especially the millions of scientists warning us of unstoppable warming (a comet hit). What did YOU do about it planet lovers?
