Dear editor: Heart disease and stroke remain leading causes of death and disability in Newfoundland and Labrador; nine in 10 of us have at least one risk factor. But with your help we are making a difference.
By funding research into better ways of preventing and treating these life-threatening and life-limiting diseases and providing risk-reduction programs, we are helping people in our province to live longer and healthier lives.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation is grateful to the many volunteers in Newfoundland and Labrador who are key to our success in preventing disease, saving lives and promoting recovery among our residents.
Volunteers are vital to this success, and at the heart of our organization.
Among the many ways that volunteers help the Foundation to advance our life-saving mission is by planning and organizing fundraising events in their local communities or workplaces. During the summer months, outdoor activities can include golf or baseball tournaments, walk-a-thons, car washes and community barbecues.
During the fall and winter months, volunteers organize skating parties, dances or silent and live auctions.
We extend an invitation and a challenge to readers of this newspaper to join our amazing provincewide team of volunteers by initiating their own fundraising event.
It’s easy and fun and what a feeling of satisfaction in knowing that the funds you raise are contributing to the health of people in your own community or in memory of a loved one.
For anyone trying to think of an idea for the workplace, consider incorporating a fundraiser in an already-established office event like a holiday party or staff barbecue.
This can be a great way to raise funds in honour of a co-worker, friend or family member affected by heart disease or stroke.
The list is endless and limited only by the scope of your imagination! Remember, this is your event to create! If you do need support or have questions we are happy to help.
To contact us please send your questions and ideas to firstname.lastname@example.org or give us a call at 709-753-8521.
Best wishes for a healthy, happy and safe summer!
