Dear Editor: I feel I must speak out regarding the threat of our firefighters going on strike.

As a citizen of Corner Brook, I have grave concern over what would happen if a strike was to occur Monday.

As a teenager, from my bedroom window on Humber Road, I tearfully watched firefighters taking young bodies from what was a fully engulfed two-storey dwelling.

These bodies were those of my play friends — who I could never play hopscotch with again.

Each time I hear a siren, my reflections go back to that horrific night when a house full of children were being taken down by firefighters on stretchers ... only to be later laid out at the Anglican Church on West Street.

With so many seniors in this city, with a majority living on their own, I beg the powers that be to see fit to make firefighting an essential service.

Agnes McCarthy, Corner Brook
