We must have no tolerance for bullying

Dear Editor:

I can state with certainty that bullying is alive and well in Corner Brook.

I may not make a difference, but I do feel compelled to publicly state my displeasure and to remind those who participate in such cruel acts of the pain they are inflicting on those innocent victims.

Bullying by those who seek out to demoralize others whom they consider inferior, should instead be showing compassion as they themselves prepare to face the challenges of life.

I know a family — a father, son and daughter. The son was bullied to the extent he ended up at the local hospital. What a shame. The father was and is still devastated. The question remains, what can a father do when we all know that the choices are limited?

This young person found himself being bullied because, would you believe, he is very shy and was reluctant to mingle.

Why shouldn’t he be permitted to just be himself? He has suffered tremendously, but if left alone and treated equally, he may with time overcome his shyness, and no doubt, will mingle.

Bullying is an ongoing problem we hear about almost on a daily basis and often when it’s too late. Those young souls suffer alone and may carry their scars with them the rest of their lives and their true talents may never be known.

Sadder still, they may turn to drugs or even, perish the thought, find they cannot cope with life and want to leave this world.

It seems so unfair that everyone is not treated in a fair manner. Some are bullied because of some disability, which in itself is sad, others because their family may not be able to afford brand name clothes and/or footwear, etc., etc.

I say zero tolerance for those who continue to make life unbearable for those who struggle on a daily basis because of bullying.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Kids that bully kids to a point that they (the kids being bullied) cannot be permitted to function within the school or community the same as others are being terrorized. It is no different than what terrirists do to inflict pain and fear on the adult population. These bullies should be expelled from school and never allowed to return until they can prove beyond any shadow of doubt that they will not bully anyone. Period...The system allows for bullying to continue and enables bullies to be bullies. Until the system finally adopts a true totally zero tolerance policy with respect to the problem with bullies it will not change. Send these little terrorists back to the parents and make it mandatory for the parents to take responsibity. And if the parents don't want to take responsiblity, lock the bullies up...................

My 14 year old has been bullied for a very long time. When he was in grade five to grade eight. He was bullied because he has a heart condition. They. Called him barney because he has poor circulation.and his skin has a bluish color. One day a kid said to him that he didnt matter and one punch in the chest hed be dead anyway. It broke my heart, I cried so hard that day. Its not fair what Kids got to go through. I do not tolerate it and never.rewell

This line struck me as something I haven't heard for a while: "Why shouldn’t he be permitted to just be himself?" Kids don't want to be different because they want to be exactly like this popular kid or that popular kid. Sometimes shy kids are saved by loving parents. They still look to mom and dad for direction. They are not "peer-oriented" like the popular kids. And in the long run, they may be better off. Doesn't make it easier in the here and now though.
