ST. JOHN'S - Two men who police believe were key players in the biggest drug bust in this province's history have been committed to stand trial.

Patrick Champoux of Quebec and Patrick Dickson of St. John's have been in custody since they were arrested as part of Operation Roadrunner, a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary undercover operation.

Dickson and Champoux - who was arrested in La Toque, Que., and brought back to this province seven months after a nation-wide warrant was issued for his arrest - were charged with trafficking and conspiracy to traffic cocaine and marijuana, and their cases were heard together in a lengthy preliminary inquiry.

Friday afternoon, provincial court judge Gloria Harding committed the pair to stand trial, after ruling there is sufficient evidence. The men have elected to have their case heard by judge and jury when their trial begins in Supreme Court.

Operation Roadrunner resulted in raids on 11 homes in the St. John's area, a dozen arrests here and in Quebec, and the seizure of 51 pounds of marijuana, 19 pounds of cocaine, $300,000, six motor vehicles, weapons, and laptops in St. John's.

It also resulted in the arrest of Marc-Andre Hinse, who was on the Quebec provincial police's 10 most wanted list.

The sting began in early 2006 as an investigation into drunken thuggery on George Street and climaxed in the bust of the drug ring, which the RNC confirmed was controlled by the Hell's Angels biker gang.
