Corner Brook -
Some parts of competing at the Canadian K2 Championships in Ontario last week were exactly what Scot Cohlmeyer expected.
Other parts? Not so much.
"The hills were a bit small," he said of Osler Bluff, Georgian Peaks and Craigleith ski resorts. "Compared to Marble (Mountain) they were smaller ... they were smaller than I thought they'd be and that makes the races shorter."
The 15-year-old Corner Brook native placed 62nd out of 86 listed athletes in the giant slalom and finished 81st in the super giant slalom. He had a pair of DNFs (Did Not Finish) in the super combined and slalom portions of the event.
"I was expecting not really good results, so that's pretty much what I expected there," he said, before admitting the DNFs stung a little.
"I straddled the gate in the super combined and I hooked a gate in slalom."
Much has been made of the difficulties for Marble Mountain this winter with regards to snowfall, but apparently it's not so bad at all.
"There was not much snow up there," said Cohlmeyer of the Ontario ski hills. "There's even less than there is here."
Although Cohlmeyer was the only Newfoundland racer who qualified to compete at the event, that distinction didn't lead to any sort of ski lodge fame.
"There were other people talking about it to some people there, but nothing really," he said.
Cohlmeyer returned home Monday, at the very least, feeling like a more complete skier than he was when he left.
"It was a good experience," he said. "It gets me used to having better competition and it was good getting to know everybody on the first day and everything."
