CORNER BROOK — Steve May isn't one to rest on his laurels.
The Corner Brook native won his second-straight 2012 Corner Brook Triathlon crown Sunday by completing the hilly course in two hours and 24 seconds.
"My time is a little faster than last year so I am super pleased with that," May said after crossing the finish line.
May admitted after the race that he had put some extra work over the past 12 months to prepare for defence of his title because he felt the triathlon committee deserved to have a defending champion step up his game this time around.
No doubt, the extra time perfecting his craft paid dividends as the nearest competitor was 109 seconds off the mark — that distinction belonging to Bill Wells of Corner Brook. Aubrey Sanders of Corner Brook claimed third place with a final clocking of 2:05:46.
One of the areas May knew he had to make some adjustments to was in the swim component so he spent more time in the water and changed his mindset about swimming.
"Swimming has always been my weakest link," he said. "I kind of took a different mental approach and said 'maybe I could improve my swimming', which is something I always figured I couldn't do, and put a little extra effort in and lo and behold I got some results in the swimming, but I've also kind of raised the biking and running game little too."
A strong field of competitors lined up for the annual race in the city for the triathlon, sprint duathlon, duathlon and a number of team events with a beehive of activity under a scorching sun. May didn't think the hot sun was a factor for him, but he couldn't help but notice how it got more challenging as the day wore on.
"The last two or three laps of the run for me were getting pretty hot," he said. "If I had to go another 10 kilometres I would have been in trouble."
For Sue Rogers, the winner of the women's triathlon with an impressive time of 2:34:22, having to battle the heat and hills was something she has always struggled with since she became immersed in the triathlon world.
"I'm not a really tiny girl so hills take the good out of me fast," she said.
Rogers had high praise for the volunteers who supported the race and the hundreds of people who came out to cheer on the participants. She was also ticked pink to see there were more females on the start line this year and that's something that puts a smile on her face.
"It means I get more company" she said with a light chuckle, "and it also means that we're doing, the girls who have been racing this for 10 years, is making a difference because we're trying to get more women out and that's positive."
In the meantime, Philip Street of Corner Brook claimed top honours in the sprint triathlon, which was a gruelling race over half the distance of the Olympic triathlon, with a final clocking of one hour, 10 minutes, 19 seconds. Greg Gallant of Pasadena snagged second spot with a final time of 1:22:26, while Matthew Barry of Corner Brook nabbed third spot after crossing the finish line in 1:13:50.
