Troy Bennett, Corey Oliver and Wayne Young – members of the Bay St. George Kinsmen Club – are seen at Stephenville Dome, where they are bringing the St. John’s IceCaps for a game on Friday, Oct. 5.

Local hockey fans will have the opportunity to watch an Amercian Hockey League game at Stephenville Dome.

The St. John’s IceCaps and the Syracuse Crunch will do battle at the arena on Oct. 5.

This pre-season game is all part of a three-game exhibition series between the IceCaps and the Crunch, billed as the Mary Brown’s Cup.

The first game in the series will take place Oct. 4 at Corner Brook’s Pepsi Centre, the second in Stephenville on Oct. 5, and the third game of the series on Oct. 7 at the Clarenville Events Centre.

The Bay St. George Kinsmen Club organized the event for Stephenville and Corey Oliver, president of the local club, said it involved four to five months of negotiating to try and get the team to have a game in Stephenville and he’s pleased they finally got the contract.

“We (Kinsmen) hope the area supports this game and that it will sell out,” he said, noting that the capacity for the Stephenville Dome is 1,800 people.

Mr. Oliver said not only will people have the opportunity to see some great hockey but they will also be supporting a local charity as proceeds are going to the Bay St. George Children’s Wish Foundation.

Those who attend will also get the opportunity to see some National Hockey League players take to the ice. That’s due to the NHL lockout and some players have being delegated to the AHL teams.

The IceCaps is the farm team for the Winnipeg Jets and the Crunch is the farm team for Tampa Bay Lightening.

Mr. Oliver said this means fans will have the opportunity to see Jason King, a native of Corner Brook, play with the IceCaps and there is a good chance that Brett Connolly, a native of St. George’s, will be playing with the Crunch, along with other NHLers on both teams.

“The Kinsmen Club of Bay St. George is proud to bring the spirit of hockey back to Stephenville at a professional level,” he said. “This will be the first time in more than a decade this calibre of hockey has been played in our town.”
