Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador announced Monday it will start accepting hosting bids for the 2015 Allan Cup, the national amateur senior championship held annually since 1909.

The deadline for accepting applications from teams and leagues is Jan. 15, 2013. The winning site will be announced Mar. 1, 2013. Applications are available through the HNL office in Grand Falls-Windsor.

It will be the second time the event has been held in this province. In 1985, the Corner Brook Royals hosted the tourney

While teams from this province regularly competed for the Allan Cup in the 1970s and 1980s — the Royals claimed the title in 1986 — Newfoundland clubs only began returning to the tournament in 2010, when the Clarenville Caribous  entered. The ‘Bous returned in 2011 and won it all.

Earlier this year, the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts travelled to Lloydminster, B.C., losing to the South East, Man., Prairie Thunder in the semifinal round. The Caribous, reigning Herder champs, plan to attend this year’s tourney in Bentley, Alta.

In 2015, there's a good chance the province could be represented by two teams in the six-team, 11-game tournament that takes place over six days in April. One team would serve as host, while the other would be the Herder Memorial Trophy champion from the previous season, assuming no other senior clubs from Atlantic Canada opt to compete.

The province’s governing body for hockey was awarded the tournament at Hockey Canada’s annual general meeting in May. Since that time, it has established a steering committee that includes chairman Bill Noseworthy, along with Clarenville Caribous president Fraser Russell, former Conception Bay North CeeBees Stars forward Chris Crosbie, former Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts’ coach Brian Casey and former Corner Brook Royals executive Angus Head.

Up Front doesn't have a clue about the hockey landscape in St. John's.... Since the Ice Caps came to town, it seems like no one cares about Sr. hockey in St. Johns and surrounding areas. Look at the sparse crowd in Torbay, look at the withdraw of the Blades and look at the sparse crowd at the Herder last year. Clarenville and Grand Falls is the epicentre of Sr. hockey in Newfoundland. This is true.

If St.John's hosts the Allan Cup someone, for sure, will forget to bring the cup to the rink. Remember the 1988 Herder when the Herder didn't make it to Corner Brook and the Royals beat the Caps.

How long is it going to be before Joe Maynard has his name and hands in on this? this type of tournament would not fly east of Roche's Line. Why? There is enough hockey on the east coast for fans to watch. IE - see Mt. Pearl Blades. Not even Harry Bartlett's ticket selling at Canadian Tire or his deep pockets could keep that team afloat Give this tournament to Clarenville, Grand Falls, or Gander where fans will turn out in droves to watch. Play games in Gander and Grand Falls. Its centrally located and there are plenty of hotels to accommodate all teams. But that makes sense. Won't happen. Sure the city of st. john's as all - rinks, hotels........but no true local hockey fans. Go to a game at the Jack Byrne Arena in the east league, there's barely enough for a good game of twister.

Actually Up Front, I don't believe the Herder made a dime last year. Tournament should be held outside St. John's. It is obvious that St. John's or Mount Pearl can't or won't support a Senior team then why should they get to host this tournament?

Political watcher, The herder still drew 4000 last year even w the ahl and wo an east coast team. 6500 per game for the allen cup involving nl. 4000 for other teams. How manyt can grand falls or clarenville handle. Can they handle the hotels and restauants needed. Just being realistic. I know the allen cup has been held in smaller areas with crappy buildings but we could change that for the better. At the time we had record crowds for the world under17 as well as sellouts for the herder up to last year. get a grip you blind liberal.
