CORNER BROOK Athletes who wear the black and gold in local sports will celebrate another season on the playing field Friday night.
The Corner Brook West Sports Club will honour its Monarchs at the annual awards night at the Palace on Broadway.
The club will present three special awards — The Terry King Memorial Award, Crown of Achievement Award and President’s Award — as well as cast the spotlight on Most Valuable Players for the six teams who wear black and gold on the field of play.
Women’s softball player Tracey Pelley, broomball player Eric Young and men’s soccer player Mark Fitzpatrick are the nominees for the Terry King Memorial Award. The Terry King Memorial Award is presented annually in the memory of the former Monarch who exemplified the qualities and prerequisites of this award by best combining sportsmanship, leadership, dedication and effort participating on the field of play for the club.
The Crown of Achievement is presented on an annual basis to an individual or group of individuals who have made an outstanding contribution through service, or otherwise, during the past year or over a number of years. The nominees for the Crown of Achievement include Mark Fitzpatrick, Finton Gaudette, Vicki Quinton and Darrell Oram.
The President’s Award is handed out to a member of the executive committee deemed by the president to have made the greatest effort to support the club through various ways such as attendance at meetings, club promotions and fundraising projects. MVP award winners to be honoured on the night include Laura Prosper (women’s softball), Adam Warren (baseball), Maddison Muggridge (women’s volleyball), Cory Rideout (men’s broomball), Richard Wells (soccer) and Mark Fitzpatrick (indoor soccer).
