CORNER BROOK  Women’s softball has grown to five teams with expansion teams added two years in a row, but now the local women’s league won’t have a home field to call their own.

Corner Brook deputy mayor Donna Luther confirmed Monday that Fred Basha Memorial Park B Diamond will no longer be one of the city’s softball venues. The deputy mayor said construction of a new facility that will have Saltos Gymnastics as a main tenant is expected to get underway in the spring of 2013 in the area known as the women’s softball home for decades.

The loss of Fred Basha Memorial Park B Diamond leaves the softball community with three venues to use for scheduling of league activities — Fred Basha Memorial Park A Diamond, the Monarchs Complex and Ambrose O’Reilly Memorial Field.

According to the deputy mayor, softball user groups, including men’s slo-pitch softball, will have to work together to iron out scheduling issues, if they arise, from having one less field available. Closing down Fred Basha Memorial Park B Diamond is part of the city’s master recreation plan, but the deputy mayor said no other decisions on the future of venues for softball have been made at this point.

“There’s room for scheduling on A Diamond with regards to playing under the lights so there’s a bit of excess time there,” deputy mayor Luther said. “With scheduling, the three fields that are left, based on the number of teams involved, there’s plenty of time to accommodate the various teams that are left to play.”

She admits there are things in the master recreation plan that could come to fruition and that includes turning Fred Basha Memorial Park A Diamond into a soccer pitch down the road, but she said there are a lot of factors to take into consideration when it comes to making parts of the document a reality.

“There’s been a lot of plans that have been kicked around over the last number of years, and a lot of it depends on money, capital funding and those types of things,” she said, noting rolling out the master recreation plan will be done as the city can afford to do it.

Women’s softball league spokesperson Katy Lukeman said there will be some juggling to do this upcoming season, with regards to scheduling games for the three softball leagues, but with three available fields, it shouldn’t be too tough to work out.

“The men said they’re willing to help us along and work with us,” she said.

Still, the decision is a tough pill to swallow for Lukeman, especially since softball has shown an increase in popularity locally the past few years and, in the off years, the women’s league was the one constant presence for the sport in the city.

“We’re not really pleased,” she said. “But I guess the decision is made and we have to do whatever we can do.”

The lingering issue for the women isn’t so much that they’re losing a field — it’s that they’re losing their field.

“The dimensions are smaller, the pitching mound is shorter,” Lukeman said, noting they’ll likely have to make some changes to the other fields when they play on them next season. “We may have to put up some temporary fencing, some temporary mounds that can be changed pretty easily.

“(B Diamond) suited us.”

Lukeman said plans are in the works for the representatives of the three softball leagues to meet shortly after Christmas so they’ll be able to take to a field in May without any delays.

“The guys are accommodating because they know the predicament we’re in,” she said. “We’ve got to have somewhere to play.”

three fields can work if changes are made

although 3 fields will be tight there is a chance that it might work. Slo- pitch has been playing on a fastpitch field for years when there is no need of it. But from dealing with slo pitch they are not willing to give up the field, But if they moved to the atlantic field and played all games up there, fastpitch could fully take over a dimond and pretty much have games going there 5 nights a week. The lights were only used by the mens fastpitch league becasue slow pitch would not give any early slots for them to play , which in hand adds extra expense's to the competitive leagues . While the slo pitch beer league gets away untouched again. The womans league is growing and growing and deserve there own field, just as the mens games , throughout playoffs, were drawing in up to 100 or more people a game cheering and watching the revived sport. Thats far more then will watch any other sport in this town. But once again the city would rather spend its money on a building to help a few people rather than fix the road to get to it. But We all know that no changes will be made though so its just as well to keep b diamond

This is the WORST decision ever made. I am so frustrated. Just when the women's league was starting grow, they take away our field!? This is ridiculous! Just another example of inequality towards women. Now we have to work around the MEN'schedule and play on the MEN's fields. Kathy said that the men would 'work' with the women, but we'll see what kind of time slots we get. It certainly won't be the 6:00-6:30 prime time that we're used to. It's hard enough to get enough women to play at prime time, now we're going to be stuck with playing 9:00 at night or something silly like that. And add to that the extra work that volunteers like Kathy and others will have to do to get the men's fields to fit us. geeeeze, someone talk some sense into Ms. Donna, would they?

Its just another of those weird decisions that have been made in the last few years .All for change, but whoever is coming up with some of this crazy stuff needs their head checked.Totally out of touch with the reality on the ground but were used to that.Just hard to get the head around it.

I play with the womans's softball league and have for many years. This is unbelievable to me. We have worked very hard to keep women's fast pitch alive in the city. We finally start growing again with five teams this past season and now we are losing our field. We will keep playing and work something out because we love our sport. it's just a shame that the city does not value it as much as we do.

losing B diamond is a tough pill to swallow especially when there is tournaments on the go ... we have used both fields in the past to keep all teams that have played for charities confined to one venue... beer tent, BBQ, tents with protection from the sun when not playing. It was just convenneint to have it all at one venue and rather than have to move to east side or alantic pitch and then have to travel back to A diamond for the tent and , bbq , etc...we have paid big money in the past and just like that its going to be handed over to saltos.....go figure...as regards to dog park....go walk ur dog somewhere else instead of having them crapping all over all ball fields like ur doing anyway.nothing worse than palying outfield and tramping in dog crap......but i guess what has to be done will be done ..... or maybe softball leagues fight it.

Can't believe the city of Corner Brook is actually doing this..Why ?? Certainly I should not be surprised,,everything seems to be changing in Corner Brook with this council...Will Fred Basha's name be attached to the new facility ?? I would certainly hope so!!!..Maybe more people should start voicing their opinions and start supporting Kathy Lukeman and fight to keep this field open...

Since Meadows has a Softball Diamond, why don't the Women's Leagues use it for their Softball Games?

Use it for something practical and desired

Time for the city to step up and use it for a dog park. The last proposal was to use a field in curling, why not use this area

Good idea - close down a field that a lot of people use, so they can grow the gymnastics club, that a handful of people use. As if it wasnt bad enough that they are funding this project in the first place, now they have to shut down a popular softball field to do it? The majority of people who use the fields, and the volleyball courts, park out being B diamond, and use this area for beer tents, etc. Will there still be access to this area via car?
