CORNER BROOK  If there was a point spread heading in, Gary Oke likely shattered it.

Oke, along with rinkmates Susan Curtis, Terry Oke and Sigrid Fitzpatrick, blasted John Andrews 18-1 during opening draw action from the Newfoundland and Labrador Curling Association Provincial Mixed Curling Championship at the Corner Brook Curling Club on Tuesday night.

He struck with five points off the bat in the first end, then followed that up with four points in both the third and fourth ends, along with deuces in the fifth and eighth and a single point in the sixth.

Andrews, who is joined by Desiree Dunn, Roger King and Jene Lee, notched his lone point in the seventh end.

Both rinks are representing the city club.

In other action, Corner Brook Curling Club’s Cal Davis edged clubmate Ed North 10-8.

The Davis rink, consisting of Marchetta Gallant, Gerry Abbott and Linda Glavine, put up three points in both the first and third ends, as well as two in the fifth and singles in the seventh and eight ends.

North, whose team also features Diane North, Tom Knight and Carolyn Colbourne, had his biggest moment in the sixth end, with five points, while scoring single points in the second, fourth and ninth.

Elsewhere, local club representative Kenny Young defeated Roy Hodder of the St. John’s ReMax Centre 9-1.

Three points in both the second and fourth helped propel Young and his rinkmates Diane Graff, Stephen Shepherd and Donna Davis to the win. He also scored singles in the third, seventh and eighth ends.

Hodder mustered his single point in the first.

On another sheet, ReMax Centre’s Stevce Routledge beat Corner Brook Curling Club’s Gerry Young 9-7 in the 11th end.

Routledge had two in the 11th to win, along with three in the first, two in the fifth and singles in the seventh and eighth ends.

Young, accompanied by Pat Spracklin, Stephen Moss and Donna Shears, picked up two points in the second and ninth ends, as well as single points in the third, fourth and 10th ends.

The second draw of the event begins 9 a.m. today with Davis playing Kenny Young, Gerry Young facing Oke, Routledge battling Hodder and North taking on Andrews. Draw 3 begins at 3 p.m.

Also tonight, the Provincial Masters Championship bracket begins at 7 p.m., featuring Corner Brook Curling Club’s Bas Buckle, clubmate Bern Lewis, along with Rick Cook of the Caribou Curling Club, and Lew Andrews and Toby McDonald, both of Bally Haly Curling Club.
