St. Anthony girls claim gold at provincial junior broomball championships

STEPHENVILLE  Maria Pynn scored twice and Kristan Patey recorded the shutout as St. Anthony White upended Goose Bay 2-0 in the championship final on the women’s side at the 2013 provincial junior broomball championships Saturday at the Stephenville Dome.

The champions earned a berth in the final by virtue of a 1-0 victory over Stephenville in semifinal play Saturday with Heather Richards scoring the game’s only goal.

The Goose Bay girls advanced to the final after a 6-0 win over Central Exploits in the other semifinal series with Sarah Roberts leading the charge with a four-goal outing and Miara Mullaly and Kim Mugford adding single markers to the scoresheet.

Stephenville was awarded the bronze medal in women’s action after Selena Benoit and Erica McDonnell scored in a 2-0 victory over Central Exploits.

Pynn got the nod as the playoff MVP in the women’s tournament, while teammate Heather Richards was the tournament’s top scorer and Kayla Olson of Stephenville was chosen most sportsminded player.

Sarah Roberts of St. Anthony White was picked MVP for round-robin play, while teammate Dana Saunders was chosen the top defender of the event.

Kelsie Hope of Goose Bay and St. Anthony’s Kristen Patey shared the top goalie honours.

Meanwhile, Tyler Tremblett and Travis Champion provided the goals and Kyle Roberts recorded the clean sheet as Bishop’s Falls eked out a 2-0 victory over St. Anthony in the junior men’s gold-medal showdown Saturday at the Stephenville Dome.

The champions downed Corner Brook 3-0 in semifinal play to earn a shot at gold, while St. Anthony claimed a berth in the final by virtue of a 3-1 triumph over Goose Bay in the other semifinal with Brandon Sexton, Justin Earle and Matt Bartlett providing the offensive punch.

The individual award winners in the junior men’s event included playoff MVP and top scorer Travis Champion, while teammate Tyler Tremblett won top defenceman honours and goalie Kyle Roberts claimed hardware for top goalie of the tournament.

Grant Young of St. Anthony was chosen MVP of the round-robin, while teammate Sam Woodford won the Most Sportsminded Player award on the men’s side.

Kyla Penney and Nicole Primmer scored the goals for the winners.

Heather Richards paved the way for the winners with a three-goal performance.

Rebecca Pilgrim and Maria Pynn also scored for the winners.

Allison King and Maria Mullaly scored for Goose Bay.

Abigail Penton replied for Stephenville.

Goose Bay 5, Central Exploits 0

Sarah Roberts was a dominant force for Goose Bay with a four-goal game leading the way for the winners.

Kim Mugford scored the other goal.

St. Anthony White 1, Stephenville 0

Rebecca Pilgrim was the lone goalscorer in a defensive battle at the Stephenville Dome.

Central Exploits 2, St. Anthony Blue 1

Danielle Boland had a two-goal performance for the victors.

Shelby Snow replied for St. Anthony Blue.

Junior Men’s

Bishop’s Falls 1, Corner Brook 0

John King scored the only goal of the game to give the Bishop’s Falls representatives a slim victory over the Corner Brook squad.

Bishop’s Falls 3, Goose Bay 0

Travis Champion had a two-goal effort to lead the charge for the central squad, while the other goal came off the broom of Brandon Dormody.

St. Anthony Blue 5, St. Anthony  White 0

Rebecca Pilgrim (2), Amy Cassell, Victoria Warren and Karla Patey took care of the offensive punch for the St. Anthony Blue squad.

St. Anthony 2, Corner Brook 0

Adrian Ward and Matt Bartlett provided the goals for the winners.

Goose Bay 5, Stephenville 0

Brandon Ramsey (3), Ben Roberts and Nathan Kennedy provided the offensive spark for the Goose Bay boys.

St. Anthony 4, Stephenville 0

Matthew Caines, Matt Bartlett, Sam Woodford and Adrian Ward scored for the victors.

Goose Bay 2, Corner Brook 1

Brandon Ramey and Jeremy Billard scored for Goose Bay.

Steven Clarke dented the twine for Corner Brook.

Bishop’s Falls 1, St. Anthony 0

Jeremy Drover scored the only goal of the game to give Bishop’s Falls a slim victory.
