CORNER BROOK Nothing was getting by Michelle O’Reilly on Wednesday night.
The Whelan’s Gate batter was 6-for-6 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored at Ambrose O’Reilly Memorial Field, as her team defeated the Rapid Power Sports Bees 14-4 to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Corner Brook Molson Ladies Fastpitch Softball League final.
O’Reilly hit a triple, two doubles and three singles in the impressive showing.
Katie Evans and Peggy Colbourne were both 3-for-5 in the win, with Evans swatting three RBIs and crossing the plate twice on two singles and a triple, while Colbourne scored once and drove in another off her three singles. Melanie Powell had two RBIs and a run scored in a 2-for-4 outing that produced a pair of singles.
Tammy Kendall led the way for the losing side, hitting three singles in four at-bats, with two RBIs and a run scored. Claudette White was 2-for-4 with two singles that led to an RBI and a run scored. Kayla Brake was 2-for-3 with two singles and an RBI, while Janna Brake was also 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to her credit.
Cora Coates emerged as the victor on the mound, allowing just 12 hits through seven innings, with no walks and three strikeouts.
Kendall took the loss, giving up 18 hits, with four walks and four strikeouts in six innings of work. Jillian Wells also pitched an inning, surrendering three hits. She had neither a walk or a strikeout.
Tied 0-0 after two innings, the Gators went up by three in the top of the third, then increased that led by two in both the fourth and fifth innings, going up 7-0, before the Bees responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to draw close.
Not much came of it, however, as the Gators racked up five runs in the sixth to essentially put the game away, before adding two in the seventh for the 14-4 final.
