STEPHENVILLE The Spartans will be out in full force with two provincial high school sports championships being staged at Stephenville High throughout the weekend.
Stephenville High is playing host to both the provincial 4A female slo-pitch softball championship and the island 3A female soccer championship.
The host Stephenville High Spartans, Roncalli High and St. Kevin’s High of Goulds will form Division A in the battle for the 4A female softball title, while Division B is comprised of Corner Brook Regional High, Marystown Central High and Queen Elizabeth Regional High.
The opening game of the tournament goes today 11:30 a.m. on A Diamond with St. Kevin’s tangling with Roncalli, while Corner Brook Regional High takes on Queen Elizabeth Regional High at 11:30 a.m. on C Diamond and Stephenville High Spartans open the tournament 1 p.m. on A Diamond against St. Kevin’s High.
The top two teams will square off in the championship final scheduled for Saturday 11 a.m. at Diamond A.
On the Mayfield soccer pitch, the Spartans are fighting for gold in a six-team two-division tournament with the top two teams squaring off in the final showdown slated for 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Spartans, Exploit’s Valley High of Grand Falls-Windsor and Laval High of Placentia will compete in Division A, while Division B is comprised of Indian River High of Springdale, Clarenville High and Mobile Central High.
The tournament got underway Thursday, with the host Spartans and Exploit’s Valley High battling to a 0-0 draw at the Mayfield soccer pitch.
