Elwood, Stephenville clash Saturday in girls hoops semifinal

A 22-point effort from Jenelle Williams helped propel the host Elwood Regional High Lakers into the semifinals of the 2014 Provincial 4A Tier 2 Girls Basketball tournament on Friday.

The Lakers defeated Exploits Valley High 59-49 in their quarter-final confrontation and will now play the Stephenville High Spartans in a semifinal game 11 a.m. today at the Elwood High gymnasium.

Olivia Janes added nine points in the victory for the Lakers.

Earlier in the day, the Lakers dropped a 60-41 decision to Holy Trinity High of Torbay.

Janes put up 10 points, while Kayley Chaulk scored six.

The Spartans, meanwhile, defeated Mealy Mountain Collegiate of Happy Valley-Goose Bay by a 47-23 count.

Hannah Stokes paced the Spartans with 16 points, while Katara White drained 11.

Other scores from Friday were: Holy Trinity 76, Clarenville 47; and Carbonear 55, Exploits Valley 26. A score from the other game between Clarenville and Carbonear was unavailable at press time, though Carbonear emerged victorious.

They will play Holy Trinity in the first semifinal match today at 9 a.m., while the championship game will go at 3 p.m.
