Local duos fare well in tough field at volleyball nationals

TORONTO — Local beach volleyball players held their own and gained some valuable experience at the 2010 Beach Volleyball National Championships in Toronto.

Relative new recruits to the beach game, the tandem of Sarah Stratton and Alicia Power finished in a tie for 23rd out of 29 teams in the Under-18 Female division.

The duo opened the preliminary round with an 18-21, 21-13, 16-24 win against Trommels/Snoyer of Ontario before falling in straight sets 6-21, 13-21 to Aubuchon/Martin of Quebec.

An 8-21, 12-21 setback against Wooding/Jones of B.C. saw the crew finish 3rd in their pool after day one.

In Day 2 action, the tandem fell 19-21, 7-21 against Diduch/Purvis of Manitoba; 17-21, 21-23 against Lambert/Massie of Quebec; 18-21, 11-21 against Ontario’s Maltby/Hazelton before downing Manitoba’s McLennon/Dyck 21-0, 21-0.

Stratton and Power ended the tourney with an elimination game loss to Grail/Ng of Ontario 18-21, 14-21.

Meanwhile, the tandem of Tyler Rowsell and Michael Morris finished tied for 17th place out of 19 teams in the Under-21 Men’s division.

The team fell 15-21, 5-21 to Humana/Onied of Ontario to start the preliminary round before White/Fontain of New Brunswick handed them a 17-21, 5-21 loss. Subsequent losses to Suprent/Rosso of Quebec (17-21, 7-21) and Vityuk/Wojcieszynski of Ontario (20-22, 20-22) saw the duo finish fifth in the preliminary round.

In Day 2 play, Morris and Rowsell dropped their first two matches of the day to a pair of teams from Quebec before recording their only win of the event against Dumond/Irwin of Ontario in a hard fought match, 21-15, 18-21, 15-13.

A 20-22, 16-21 loss to Ontario’s McGirr/Fudalej in an elimination match spelled the end for the local boys.
