CORNER BROOK — Colin Wood scattered five hits and marked up nine strikeouts in a complete game as the Hawks downed the Aces 5-2 Sunday at Jubilee Field.
The crafty southpaw issued five walks over seven innings in the early Corner Brook Molson Senior Baseball League contest Sunday.
Alvin Lafitte took the loss after surrendering five runs on nine hits and two walks in six innings for the Aces.
Mike Brake was the top hitter for the Hawks going 3-for-3 with a solo homer.
Rob George was the offensive force for the Aces going 2-for-3 and driving in a run.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first inning when Fred Prosper scored on an error and took a 2-0 lead in the third when Brake belted his solo shot.
The Aces got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when Glen Seaborn scored on an error and tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth when Gary White scored on Rob George’s single.
However, it was the Hawks who had have the last say as the green and gold pushed across a trio of runs in the home half of the sixth to seal the deal.
Mike Brake scored on Mike Simms’ single, Darren O’Quinn slashed a double to cash in Simms and Jamie Brake scored on John Clarke’s base hit in the bottom of the sixth in the mini-rally.

Brian Bennett scattered three hits and one walk over five innings to register the pitching win for the Aces.
Alvin Lafitte allowed one run on four hits and two walks in two innings of relief work.
Cory Lockyer was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on four hits and one walk in two innings. Veteran southpaw Frank Humber mopped up in relief, allowing only two hits and chalking up five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Roy Myrden and Brian Bennett scored on passed balls in the first inning to give the Aces a 2-0 advantage.
The Aces scored a trio of runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead with Glen Seaborn scoring on a passed ball, Gary White scoring on Rob George’s single and Bennett capping the uprising by driving a single to score George.
Daniel Humber scored on Darren Colbourne’s single in the seventh inning to break the shutout bid.
Bennet was the top hitter for the Aces going 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Daniel Humber went 3-for-3 with a double and run scored for the Hawks.
