It was a bittersweet win for Whalen's Gate over the Cardinals on Wednesday night, staving off elimination to battle for their playoff hopes of advancing to the final series of the Corner Brook Molson 67 Men's Softball League.
In a series where emotions have been running high — a crowded diamond witnessed yet another one to remember between two teams who have formulated a rivalry over the years. The Gate brought back a passion to the field from last season — which saw them battle back from a 2-0 series deficit to win the series — and were able to pull through in Game 3 Wednesday to beat the Cardinals 4-3.
It was a much different result from the previous two games of the series, which the Cardinals dominated at the plate in a 10-0 win in Game 1 and a 13-0 trashing in Game 2.
Coady Kelly threw seven strong innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits and three walks while picking up seven strikeouts in the win.
He had two big strikeouts in the top of the seventh with the Cardinals threatening to tie the contest with the tying run on second base, but the crafty southpaw whiffted the third strike past Jamie Brake and Cory Hurley to get the big victory.
Barry Smith had a solo homerun for the winners.
Des Ball and Chanel Allain hit homers for the Cardinals.
Game 4 is scheduled for Monday 9 p.m. at Fred Basha Memorial Park on Wellington Street.
