What had been a close game got blown wide open by the West Side Monarchs.
The gold and black scored six runs over the course of the fifth and sixth innings to pick up a 7-0 victory against the Supplement Shack Junior Barons in Corner Brook Molson Senior Baseball League play Tuesday night at Jubilee Field.
Adam Warren was stellar on the mound for the victors, allowing just four hits through seven innings, while walking one. He struck out four.
Matt Colbourne suffered the pitching loss, despite racking up seven strikeouts. He gave up four earned runs on five hits over five innings, with four walks. Tyler Gardner stepped in for one inning, getting charged with three runs — two earned — on two hits and a walk.
Both Aaron Flood and Jeff Gillam were 1-for-3 to lead the Monarchs, with Flood in particular having a monster stat line that included two runs scored, an RBI and three stolen bases. Gillam swatted in two runs.
Jay Warford and Travis Taylor both had one hit in three trips to the plate for the baby Barons.
The Monarchs struck quickly, in the bottom of the first, when Flood took matters into his own hands. He reached base on a walk, stole second and then watched as teammate Greg Sharpe was also walked. With Michael Tavenor at the dish, Flood stole third and then, as Sharpe stole second himself, Flood stole home to register the game’s opening run in unique fashion.
The score stayed the same until the bottom of the fifth, when again Flood got things moving with a single that scored Jonathan Wheeler. A single from Gillam then scored Tavenor and Sharpe.
In the bottom of the sixth, Steve Sheppard cashed in when Flood reached base on an error. A Mark Armstrong single sent Wheeler across the plate again, before Flood scored on a sacrifice fly from Tavenor to close out the offence on this night.
