Colin Thomas leads Memorial to berth in CIS championship

ST. JOHN’S  Memorial University’s men’s curling team is tops in Atlantic Canada.

Led by coach Jeff Thomas, the Memorial men’s curling rink won the 2014 Atlantic University curling championship by defeating Saint Mary’s 7-6 in 11 ends in the final Saturday night in Fredericton.

The championship rink includes skip Colin Thomas, third Cory Schuh, second Chris Ford and lead Spencer Wicks.

The team went 2-0 in the five-team bonspiel, posting a 9-4 victory over the University of Prince Edward Island before the showdown with Saint Mary’s.

Thomas and company, along with B final winner University of New Brunswick, have earned the right to compete at the 2014 Canadian Intercollegiate Sport (CIS) curling championship scheduled for Regina, Sask. in March.

Memorial, with the same lineup, won the 2011 CIS curling championship in St. John’s.
