Wins eight straight provincial men's curling championship, defeating Thomas in final

In what’s become an annual occurrence, Brad Gushue’s rink has won the Tankard provincial men’s curling championship.
Gushue captured his eighth straight Tankard title and 11th overall as he and teammates Brett Gallant, Adam Casey and Geoff Walker defeated Colin Thomas’s rink 6-2 in the Tankard final Saturday night at the Bally Haly Golf and Curling Club.

Gushue won 6-2 for his 11th Tankard title.

As a result, Gushue will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the Tim Hortons Brier national men’s championship March 1-9 in Kamloops, B.C.

The win over Thomas completed a perfect week for Gushue, who was 5-0 in the preliminary round-robin and has skipped teams to 31 straight round-robin and playoff games in Tankard competition, dating back to 2010.

Thomas, who was also the runner-up to Gushue in the 2013 Tankard, had finished the round-robin in a three-way tie for second with Trent Skanes and Ken Peddigrew, all with 3-2 records.

That led to a couple of tiebreakers Saturday. The first saw Skanes edge Peddigrew 5-4 in an extra end, using last-rock advantage to get the winning point in the 11th. In the second tiebreaker, Thomas and his rink of Cory Schuh, Chris Ford and Spencer Wicks doubled Skanes and Co. 8-4 to advance to meet Gushue.

Because Gushue had been unbeaten in the round-robin, Thomas would have needed to win twice to win the championship. As it was, Gushue only needed one game to retain the title, scoring five points in the fifth end.

All six rinks at this year’s Tankard were based out of St. John’s; Gushue and Skanes curl out of Bally Haly, while Thomas, Peddigrew, Rick Rowsell and Andrew Symonds  are from the St. John’s Curling Club (Re/Max Centre).
