O’Neil, Barron out of the gate quick at junior curling provincials

A late rally by Corner Brook Curling Club representative Nicholas O’Neil lifted him to a 7-6 victory over Alex Phillips of St. John’s in play Thursday from the Under-18 division at the 2014 provincial junior curling championships at the Gander Curling Club.

Down 6-3 entering the sixth end, O’Neil — along with rinkmates Kyle George, Jordan Carter and Matthew English — scored singles in the next two ends, capping it off with a deuce in the eighth to grab the win.

He had previously put up two in the second and one in the fourth.

Phillips had four in the fifth end, with singles in the first and third.

Meanwhile, Kyle Barron and his Caribou Curling Club team of Ryan McNeil Lamswood, Greg Smith and Craig Laing thumped St. John’s skip Greg Blyde 11-4.

Barron had four in the seventh, three in the fourth and deuces in the second and sixth en route to the triumph.

Blyde mustered two in the first and single points in the third and fifth ends.

The other score from the opening draw was Andrew Taylor 6; Andrew Lawrence 5.

The following are summaries from the other divisions of the provincial junior curling championships:

 

Male

Under-16

Corner Brook Curling Club’s Daniel Bruce rink — also featuring Nathan King, Andrew Bruce and Bradley Power — took down Caribou Curling Club’s Adam Kendall, along with rinkmates Kieran Wells, Andrew Joy and Will Butler, by an 8-0 score.

Bruce amassed five points in the third end to seal the win, after picking up two in the first and one in the second.

In other action, it was Ethan Davidge 5, Nathan Young 2.

 

Female

Under-18

Caribou Curling Club’s Rebecca Roberts took down Mackenzie Glynn of St. John’s 6-1 in the only game from the under-18 female division on Thursday.

Roberts notched four points in the third end and two in the first.

Glynn had one point in the second end.

Action from the under-16 female division begins today.
