Down 7-4 heading into the ninth end, Corner Brook Curling Club’s Gary Oke rink roared back to steal a 9-7 victory from Steve Routledge of St. John’s on Wednesday.
Oke — along with rinkmates Susan Curtis, Terry Oke and Sigrid Fitzpatrick — put up three points in the 10th end, deuces in the first and ninth and singles in the second and fifth ends.
The win puts them at 4-0 and atop the standings at the 2014 Provincial Mixed Curling Championships, being played at the Gateway Curling Club in Port aux Basques.
Routledge scored two in the third and eighth and singles in the fourth, sixth and seventh ends.
Earlier in the day, Oke outdueled fellow Corner Brook representative Brian Bailey 7-4.
Oke picked up a deuce in the seventh end and singles in the first, second, fourth, ninth and 10th in the win.
Bailey — playing with Donna Davis, Steve Shepherd and Donna Shears — had single points in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth ends.
Corner Brook Curling Club’s Kenny Young, meanwhile, picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday to move to 3-1 and a tie for second place with host rink Baxter House.
Young — and teammates Amanda Rumboldt, Steve Moss and Kathy Miles — edged St. John’s skip Steve Ryan 7-4 on the strength of a pair of points in the fifth end and singles in the first, second, sixth, seventh and ninth ends.
Ryan had two in the fourth and singles in the third and eighth.
Later, Young trounced Gateway’s Don Gillam 12-3.
Young made it rain in the seventh end, with six points, to go with a triple in the second and singles in the first, third and fifth ends.
Gillam — with rinkmates Trudy Keeping, Arch Keeping and Karen Simon — had two in the fourth and one in the sixth.
House, meanwhile, eked out a 5-4 decision over Routledge in his opening match of the day.
Along with teammates Sue Thomas, Dave Thomas and Jenna Harvey, House put up singles in the second, fifth, sixth, ninth and 10th ends.
Routledge mustered two in the fourth and singles in the seventh and eighth ends.
Afterwards, House defeated Bailey 7-5.
It was all singles for the House rink, in the first, seocnd, third, fifth, sixth, eighth and 10th ends.
Bailey scored three in the fourth and two in the seventh in the losing cause.
In Gillam’s other match on the day, he was defeated 12-1 by Bill Jenkins of St. John’s.
Jenkins scored five in the second, three in the fifth, two in the sixth and singles in the first and third.
Gillam responded with his lone point in the fourth.
In the only other game, Jenkins defeated Ryan 8-1.
