CORNER BROOK — Steve Hynes was a big factor in helping the Golden Gophers down the defending champions on the gridiron Sunday.
Hynes connected with Fred Prosper for two touchdowns to lead the Gophers to an 18-0 victory over Marine Lounge — defending champions in the Coors Light Touch Football League — at the Wellington Street Sports Complex in one of three league games played on Week 2 of the schedule.
Adam Joyce picked off Marine QB Adam Anderson and on the return made a beauty heads-up play by tossing the ball on a lateral to Peter MacDonald who ran it in for a score.
Jay Warford and Fred Prosper had interceptions for the Gophers.
Rob Park and Adam Anderson had interceptions for the Marine Lounge squad.
Meanwhile, the Raiders moved into sole possession of first place with a 2-0 record with a 9-0 win over the Western College Jets of Stephenville.
Raiders QB Bill Avery recorded a rogue just before the half to put his team up 1-0.
The game remained at 1-0 until Avery hit Richard Thomson for a touchdown with just two minutes left in regulation time.
The Raiders quarterback then connected with Colin Lynch for a two-point convert.
Lynch also had an interception for the Raiders picking off Jets QB Steve Perry, while Colin Dunphy picked off Jets QB Jimmy Strickland on two occasions.
Glen Aucoin of the Jets sacked QB Avery on two occasions, while Tuiri Lomond also recorded a sack for the airport town representatives. The only other league contest Sunday saw the Pasadena Pirates shade the Falcons by a 21-15 spread at Wellington Street Sports Complex.
League action resumes Sunday with three games on tap at Wellington Street Sports Complex with the Falcons tangling with the Gophers at 10 a.m., Pirates matching wits with the Raiders at noon and Marine Lounge battling the Jets in a contest slated for a 2 p.m. start.
