Two provincial golfers in the hunt at Humber Valley Resort

Two Newfoundlanders find themselves in the hunt for the junior boys golf crown after one round at the 2014 CN Future Links Atlantic Championship.

Ian Lewis of Fall River, N.S. carded a 71 round at Humber Valley Resort on Day 1 Monday to take the early lead in the 54-hole championship event, while Tyler Erb of Toronto, Ont. and Bobby Dunphy of Antigonish, N.S. are one stroke behind the leader after both guys registered 72 rounds Monday afternoon.

Nathan Peters of St. John’s is tied for fourth spot overall after one round with a 73 on Day 1, which was equalled by Owen Patterson of Bedford, N.S.

Blair Bursey of Gander enters Day 2 in a five-way deadlock for seventh spot on the boys side after carding a 76 round on a course ranked as the ninth-best modern course in Canada by Golfweek earlier this year.

Matthew Bonnell, out of the Blomidon Golf Club in Corner Brook, cracked the top 20 on opening day with a 79 round, putting him in a four-way tie for 18th spot.

The top six competitors in the junior boys division of each CN Future Links Championship earn an exemption into the 2014 Canadian junior boys golf championship at the Legends on the Niagara’s Battlefield Course July 28 to Aug. 1 in Niagara Falls.

Rachael Cormier of Rothesay, N.B. leads the way in the junior girls division with an opening day score of 79, three strokes ahead of Laura Jones of Berry Mills, N.B. Bailey Carr of Charlottetown, P.E.I. is in third place with a score of 83.

Corner Brook’s Angela Earle sits in eighth place after the first round after scoring a 98. Three other Corner Brook golfers are involved — Abigail Hickey, who shot a 115; Paige Hickey with a 119; and Taylor Cormier, who fired a first-round score of 122.

The junior girls champion from each CN Future Links Championship will earn an exemption into the 2014 Canada Junior Girls Golf Championship at Thornhill Golf and Country Club July 28 to Aug. 1 in Thornhill, Ont.
