CORNER BROOK  Matt Bonnell appreciates an opportunity to gain competitive experience on the greens.

The Corner Brook native, a member of the Blomidon Golf Course, is one of the budding golfers in western Newfoundland honing his skillset on The Tely Junior Golf Tour.

Bonnell kicked off his 2014 Tely Tour season by winning top honours in the juvenile boys division at the Harmon Seaside Links Junior Invitational Monday in Stephenville. The event is one of 13 stops on the tour, which will culiminate with the Tour Championship Aug. 25 at Terra Nova.

“I think it’s a great way to just get into golf and get introduced to the tournaments, and it’s great to see younger people coming out and trying it,” Bonnell said of why he loves the Tour.

He carded a 75 round in the 18-hole event to claim bragging rights.

“I was just hitting all my shots really solid,” Bonnell said of his victory.

According to the 14-year-old, it was a great day for a round of golf in Stephenville with a light breeze and a sunny sky accompanying him on his trek around the links. He had played a round of golf at Harmon Seaside last year so he had some familiarity with the course, such as keeping in mind that the greens are smaller.

Everything just seemed to fall in place for him it appears.

“I was really pleased with how I played. I was going in feeling really good and I couldn’t wait to get out and play in another tournament,” he said.

Andrew Bruce and Nathan King, fellow competitors at Blomidon, manged to finish tied for second spot in the juvenile boys bracket with both scoring 81 rounds.

Paige Hickey won the bantam girls crown with a 49 round in a division that features competition over nine holes instead of 18, six strokes better than Meghan Colbourne.

The next stop on the Tour is Wednesday with the young bloods showing their stuff at the Grand Falls Junior Invitational. The week wraps up with the Gander Junior Open Thursday at the Gander Golf Club.
