Andrew Bruce wasn’t about to settle for second spot twice in one week.
Bruce, a promising young golfer out of the Blomidon Golf Course, took top honours in the juvenile boys division at the Grand Falls Junior Invitational Wednesday afternoon. The tournament was a stop on The Tely Junior Golf Tour, a showcase of budding female and male golfers in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Bruce won the title by registering a 74 round in the 18-hole event at the Grand Falls-Windsor Golf Club. He finished in a tie for second spot with Corner Brook’s Nathan King at the Harmon Seaside Links Junior Invitational Monday, six strokes behind winner Matt Bonnell of Blomidon.
Bruce was cruising along the course two under when he reached the par-5 No. 15 hole. This was his toughest one of the day as he marked a nine on his scorecard for No. 15, but he was able to maintain his composure and ward off any potential threats.
“I was upset, but I knew that I was still in the lead so I just tried to par the next couple of holes,” Bruce said following his round Wednesday.
The 14-year-old Corner Brook native managed to get his game back on track and was happy to see his name at th top of the leaderboard early in the Tour.
“It’s good to win to get some points for the Tely Tour championship,” he said, noting his chipping was certainly a factor in him getting the win.
On this day, Bonnell would have to settle for fourth place in a field of 13 golfers in the juvenile boys bracket with a score of 78 Wednesday.
Michael Simms placed second with a 76 round, while Grant Lane nabbed third spot in the juvenile showcase with a 77 round.
King carded an 86 round on Wednesday to claim seventh place overall.
Joseph Cluney of Blomidon won the bantam boys crown, which was played over nine holes, with a 53 score, while Angela Earle of Massey Drive won the junior girls crown in a field of just three players with an 89 round.
The Tour continues today with players pursuing points up for grabs at the Gander Junior Open at the Gander Golf Club.
