Shooting a two-under par round of golf is impressive for even the most seasoned golfer, but when it’s a teenager pencilling in the score it’s a pretty big deal.

Andrew Bruce, a 15-year-old rising star in the junior ranks at Blomidon Golf Course, carded a two-under 68 round at Blomidon Thursday at the Corner Brook Junior Invitational, a stop on the 2014 Tely Junior Golf Tour.

His 68 round on a sunny day at Blomidon really caught the attention of Wayne Allen, a PGA professional who is immersed in working with the budding junior boys and girls who frequent Blomidon on a daily basis.

“To shoot 68 is very impressive for anybody, let alone somebody of that age,” Allen said of Bruce’s stellar performance in winning the juvenile division Thursday.

Bruce, son of Dennis and Sandra, was pleased with how his day unfolded, giving credit to not losing any balls in the woods and getting the job done with his putter.

Having the best round of golf in his young life was something he believes will boost his confidence in his quest to get better with each swing of the club and challenge for the juvenile boys title at the final Tour stop later this month.

“I drove the ball really well and I’ve never shot in the 60s before, so to do it in a tournament is a lot better,” he said.

Allen said Blomidon is a tough course to play, albeit reasonably short, with golfers having to deal with its various undulations.

It helps, Allen said, that Bruce spends a lot of time playing the course with fellow Tour participants twin brother Daniel, Matt Bonnell and Nathan King.

“They help each other because it’s reasonably competitive between them and they kind of push each other on,” Allen said.

Bruce, who Allen believes has a phenomenal swing in his favour, also knows the different aspects of the game that make a golfer complete.

“He’s got a great attitude towards the game and he just really wants to improve, and he’s making great strides in the game,” Allen said.

The Tour continues today with the Humber River Golf Course Junior Invitational in Deer Lake.
