CORNER BROOK  Dan Pilcz enjoyed winning his first men’s club championship at Blomidon with a handful of young guns giving him a run, but he was more interested in talking about Matt Bonnell pushing him to the limit than his own game.

“I worked really hard for it. They weren’t giving it to me,” a relieved Pilcz said of winning the title by beating 14-year-old Matthew Bonnell in a one-hole playoff Sunday to grab the title.

Pilcz entered Day 2 of the championship three strokes behind Bonnell, but his round of 70 Sunday put him in a tie with the kid with both showing a 36-hole total of 142.

On the first playoff hole on the par-4 No. 1, Pilcz parred the hole and Bonnell had a double bogey to put an end to all the wishing and hoping at Blomidon Golf Course where heavy rain struck on two occasions during the final round, but didn’t appear to impact the course as players made their way around the course.

Pilcz said Bonnell and several other young golfers are to be commended for rising to the occasion with defending champion Michael Tibbo not back to defend his crown because he was participating in the Atlantic Golf Championships.

He believes the future of Blomidon is in good hands with players like Bonnell giving everybody a run for their money on the course with a consistent effort. He just hopes they stick around for years to come because the club can only get bigger and better with such talent in the mix.

The turning point in a close battle, he said, came on the 13th hole. Pilcz made up some ground with a birdie on No. 13 and Bonnell struggled with a three-putt.

“That was a big swing in momentum. It was me probably letting him know I was coming,” Pilcz said.

Donna Davis, who spent the past three years as a member of Humber Valley Resort, won the women’s club championship with a two-day total of 167 after clinching the crown with an 84 round Sunday.

She was 14 strokes better than Karen Mercer — a club champion on a couple of occasions in the past — who finished up Sunday with a 181 total after carding an 89 round.

She enjoyed the comaraderie on the course, enjoyed the fast greens and the weather proved to be just great for a weekend on the golf course.

“The stars aligned. I had a great day,” Davis said with a light chuckle.
