Matt Bonnell might only be 14, but he’s already picked up a few superstitions even a golf pro would appreciate.

Most notably, he wears the same outfit during tournament play.

The way his summer on the course is going, don’t expect him to change his routine soon.

Bonnell fired a final round 72 Thursday to finish with a three-day total of 218 to capture the junior boys crown at the E.L. Bugden Junior Club Championships at the Blomidon Golf Club.

The victory was just another in a summer to remember on the course for Bonnell, who won the Tely Junior Golf Tour’s boys juvenile title at the Tour Championship at the Terra Nova Golf Course this week.

The Corner Brook golfer finished the Tely Tour with five titles.

He led the three-day tourney form wire-to-wire on the strength of rounds of 72, 74 and 72.

Daniel Bruce finished second with rounds of 88, 74 and 76 to finish at 238, while his brother Andrew finished in third with a combined score of 239 thanks to rounds of 75, 84 and 80.

With a comfortable lead in the bag before his final tee time, the 14-year-old said his celebration was somewhat muted after holing his final putt on 18.

“I’m sure if it was closer and I made a nice putt to win, I might be a little more excited but I’m still pretty happy,” he said.

Bonnell said he was able to hit long, straight drives throughout the tournament so he was able to use short irons and wedges on most of his approach shots.

Meanwhile, Abigail Hickey fired a 103 in her final round to claim the junior girls title with a three-day total of 302. The 14-year-old opened the tourney with a 106 before a 93 Tuesday gave her a commanding lead heading into the final round.

Taylor Cormier finished second after shooting 106, 107 and 109 for a three-day score of 322.

Paige Hickey rounded out the top-three with a final tally of 325 after shooting rounds of 123, 102 and 100.

Hickey said after finishing second in the event the past two seasons, it was satisfying to final capture the crown this time.

She said a fourth place finish in the Tely Tour over the summer fueled her confidence at Blomidon.

“This is special because it’s my home course and I spend the year golfing here,” Hickey said.

While it was nice to win, she admits she felt mixed emotions when playing against some of her close friends.

“You still have to cheer on the other competitors but you definitely want to win yourself,” she said.
