STEPHENVILLE  The first period belonged to the St. James Regional High Saints, the second was owned by the Stephenville High Spartans.

Or, more specifically, the first was all Nick Drover, the second was the Nathan Philpott show.

Philpott scored four times — uninterrupted to open the second stanza — as the Spartans rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Saints 7-3 in West Coast High School Hockey League play Tuesday night at the Stephenville Dome.

Cody White, Dawson Drake and Andrew Milley also struck for the Spartans.

Drover (2) and Tristan Manstan did the damage in the loss.

Jordi Green tended goal for the victors, with Michael Warren suffering the defeat.

“He had an outstanding game,” Spartans coach Kevin Green said of Philpott. “It was the best game I’ve seen him play this year.”

The winless Saints came out firing in the first and were rewarded for their efforts at 4:47, when Drover scored from Andrew Hayes to make it 1-0.

Drover buried another at 3:12, from Tristan Butt, to send his squad into the first intermission up by two. The lead quickly evaporated.

Philpott scored his first at 13:12 of the second, assisted by Ian MacDonald and Trevor Snow. He added his second at 10:20, from William Bailey, before completing the natural hat trick at 10:02, this one assisted by Snow. He capped it off with another goal at 5:47, unassisted, giving his team the 4-2 advantage.

Manstan lit the lamp at 3:31, from Andrew Clarke, to pull the Saints back to within one, but White restored the two-goal cushion for the Spartans with 1:58 to go in the middle frame. Logan McIsaac assisted.

The third period saw Drake score unassisted at 5:39, with Milley making it a 7-3 game 10 seconds later, from MacDonald, to close out the scoring.

Whatever was said in the locker room during the first intermission seemed to light a fire under Philpott.

“I just told them to keep playing,” said Green. “They were getting their chances, we knew we’d eventually get a few goals.”

With the Saints seeking out their first victory of the season, Green said the quick start wasn’t entirely unexpected.

“We knew they were going to be tough,” he said. “They got away from us a bit, but we managed to keep them in check and catch up.”

The following is a summary of the other league game on Tuesday night:

Elwood High Lakers 8, Gros Morne Academy Panthers 7

Jalen Gillard recorded a hat trick, including the game-winner at 11:56 of the third period, as the Lakers edged the Panthers at the Gros Morne Arena in Rocky Harbour to grab a share of first place in the five-team league.

Jared Bartlett (2), Jacob Bennett (2) and Justin Compton did the rest for the Lakers.

Luke Parsons (3), Shannon Moores (2) and Nathan Ellsworth (2) supplied the firepower for the losing side.

Tristan Moss was the winning goaltender, with Jonah Reid taking the loss. Reid entered the game in relief of starter Cody Brown midway through the second period.

The Lakers and Corner Brook Regional High Titans are now even atop the standings with 4-1-0 records, with the Panthers and Spartans tied directly behind them at 2-3-0. The Saints fall to 0-4-0 on the year.
