Western Kings post 2-2 record in Whitbourne

CORNER BROOK  The Colemans Western Kings posted a 2-2 record as the provincial major midget hockey league franchises coverged on the Whitbourne Arena over the weekend.

The tournament is one of two staged during the regular season to cut down on travel expenses for the five franchises in the major midget league.

The Kings wrapped up the tournament Sunday morning with a 5-3 loss to the league-leading Central Ice Pak with an empty-net goal sealing the deal in the dying minutes of the game.

The Kings opened the weekend with a convincing 9-2 triumph over the St. John’s Privateers before losing 4-1 to the St. John’s Maple Leafs with Brandon Anstey scoring the lone goal for the western boys.

The Kings had a .500 weekend by virtue of a 5-3 victory over the Tri-Pen Osprey.

The defending champion Kings will resume action this weekend with a two-game series against the Privateers on home ice at the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook.
