Panthers pounce on Saints to move into top spot

ROCKY HARBOUR  The Gros Morne Academy Panthers moved into top spot in the West Coast High School Hockey League with a sweep of the Saint James Saints.

The Panthers improved to 6-3 on the season with a brace of wins over the Port aux Basques entry Sunday at the Gros Morne Arena in Rocky Harbour.

Shannon Moores paved the way for the Panthers with two goals and three assists as the Panthers completed the weekend sweep with a 6-0 win over the Saints in the second game.

Cody Brown recorded the shutout for the Panthers, who also had Nathan Ellsworth on fire with two goals and two assists.

Luke Parsons and Jeffrey Anderson also dented the mesh for the Panthers.

Mitchell Warren was between the pipes for the Saints.

In the first game, Ellsworth had four goals and one assist to lead the Panthers to a convincing 11-4 win Sunday morning in Rocky Harbour.

Moores was an offensive force with two goals and two assists, while Parsons shared the spotlight with two unassisted markers and a brace of helpers for a four-point game.

Brandon Welsh, Robert Gill and Mateo Gill rounded out the scoring parade for the Panthers.

Tristan Butt was the offensive star for the Saints with a two-goal performance.

Andrew Pike and Nelson King also dented the twine for the Port aux Basques boys, while Nicholas Drover was in a festive mood setting up three goals in a losing cause.
