Gallagher powers Blades past Royals in shootout

DEER LAKE  Brendan Gallagher scored twice in regulation and buried two more in the shootout, including the clincher, as the Mount Pearl H J Bartlett Electric Blades beat the Western Royals 5-4 Friday night at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex.

Cory Blackmore and Spencer Jezegou also potted regulation time goals for the victors.

Ryan Penney (2), Mark Robinson and Justin Barbour provided the offence for the Royals.

Ryan Mior outdueled Bryan Gillis between the pipes.

Penney opened the scoring at 7:16 of the first period, from Michael Hynes and Adam Guy.

Blackmore evened it at 14:13, with Jezegou and Gallagher drawing the assists.

Quickly after that, at 16:42, the Blades went up 2-1 on a goal from Gallagher. Steve Yetman and Jezegou assisted.

Mount Pearl grabbed a 3-1 lead at 4:45 of the middle frame, with Jezegou scoring unassisted.

They went up 4-1 just 1:31 after that, on a shorthanded marker by Gallagher.

Barbour got the Royals back in it at 6:50 of the third, from Matthew Thomey and Mark Robinson, before Robinson himself tied it at 10:01. Thomey and Barbour picked up the helpers.

From there came the shootout.

Gallagher buried both his opportunities, with Blackmore also scoring in the tiebreaker.

Scott Doody and Penney were the only two Royals to convert their chances.

The Blades improve to 11-11-0 on the year, while the Royals move to 10-9-3.

The two teams lock horns again tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Hodder.
