Western settles for silver at provincial AAA midget female hockey tourney

SPRINGDALE  The Central IcePak have pulled off a repeat.

The IcePak defended its provincial AAA Midget female hockey crown by shading Western 4-2 in the championship final Sunday in Springdale.

The champions will now represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2014 Atlantic AAA Midget Female Hockey Championship April 3-6 at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex in Deer Lake.

The Western team will be the host team for an event designed to showcase the top female hockey players in the four Atlantic provinces on an annual basis.

The winner of the Atlantic tournament will represent the region at the Esso Cup — Canada’s national AAA Midget female hockey tournament — being staged April 20-27 in Hamilton, Ont.

Tri-Pen managed to snag the bronze medal in Springdale with a 6-4 victory over Eastern.

Western, second seed overall, earned a berth in the gold-medal showdown by virtue of a 4-2 victory over third-place Eastern.

Western’s round-robin record included a 5-1 triumph over Tri-Pen, a 3-2 loss to the IcePak and a 5-4 loss to Eastern.
