The Gros Morne Academy Panthers reclaimed first place from the Corner Brook Regional High Titans the old-fashioned way — they beat them for it.

The Panthers bested the Titans 5-2 in Monday night action from the West Coast High School Hockey League at the Gros Morne Arena in Rocky Harbour.

Garrett Hynes, Luke Parsons, Nathan Ellsworth, Mateo Gill and Shannon Moores scored for the victors.

Matt Colbourne and Danny Gallant provided the offence in the losing cause.

Jonah Reid earned the goaltending decision over Tyler Gardner.

The Titans led 1-0 after the first period thanks to an early goal from Colbourne, just 1:14 in, from Andrew Taylor.

Hynes tied it two minutes into the second, from Parsons and Ellsworth.

Then Parsons scored at 3:27, from Tyler Gill and Robert Gill, to make it a 2-1 game for the home team.

Ellsworth put the Panthers up 3-1 at 10:36 of the middle frame, from Tyler Gill.

Gallant cut the deficit to 3-2 early in the third, at 1:55, on an unassisted effort.

That was it for the visitors, however, as Mateo Gill made it 4-2 at 7:25, from Parsons and Robert Gill.

Moores then closed out the scoring at 12:15, from Robert Gill and Cole Bugden.

The Panthers move to 7-4-0 on the year, jumping ahead of the Titans and their final record of 7-5-0. The Panthers won all three regular season meetings between the two clubs.

The Titans now find themselves in a second-place tie with the 7-5-0 Stephenville High Spartans, but the Titans claim the higher seed by taking the regular-season series 2-1. The Elwood High Lakers finish at 5-7-0, giving them the final playoff berth over the 3-8-0 St. James Regional High Saints.

Just one game now remains in the regular season, a yet-to-be-scheduled contest between the Panthers and Saints.
