Gardner’s two goals keys playoff rec hockey victory

Staking claim to the city’s recreational hockey league crown is underway.

Craig Gardner, Jamie Brake and Dwayne Evoy scored two goals apiece to lead Marble Zip to a 9-3 triumph over the Mooseracks in round-robin playoff action from the Corner Brook Molson Recreational Hockey League Tuesday night.

Jeff Murphy, Jason Bugden and Scott Wayson added single markers in support of winning puckstopper Craig McCarthy at the Kinsmen Arena II. Mike White, Mitch Goodyear and Corey Chubbs scored for the Mooseracks with Jeff Carey between the pipes.

In other action, Steve Bugden, Brad Lucas, Craig Peddle and Paul Bennett scored in Western Mazda’s 4-2 victory over Health & Performance Physio.

Adam Tilley and Ashley Buckle replied for the H & P representatives. Chris Grant outduelled Rob Roberts in the goaltending matchup.

The final game of the night saw Glen Porter come out on top over Mike Bavis in a goaltending duel as NAPA/Merry’s/Meineke edged West 96 by a 2-1 score.

Brandon Sparkes and Paul Foley scored for the winners. Kirby Gillingham was the lone marksman for the opposing bench.

Playoff action resumes Thursday night with three games on the slate.
