DEER LAKE — Budding swimmers in western Newfoundland punched their ticket to the 2012 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games at a Games trial swim meet at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex over the weekend.
The western swimming contingent for the Games, being staged in Carbonear and Harbour Grace in August, includes the top six performers in male and female in both the 14 and Under and 15 and Under age brackets.
Shelby Pike of the Deer Lake Dolphins claimed top spot in 14 and Under Girls with 100 points, while Emily Fisher of the Corner Brook Rapids accumulated 76 points and Brooke Warren of Deer Lake Dolphins earned third position in the top six with 67 points.
The remaining members of the 14 and Under female squad include Bobbi Nelson (64) and Ashley Redlon (56), both of whom weren’t representing either of the local swim clubs, and Katie Perry of the Corner Brook Rapids (53).
Western’s 14 and Under male squad includes Daniel Sparkes of the Corner Brook Rapids (100), Quinn Purchase of Corner Brook Rapids (85), Noah Penney of the Corner Brook Rapids (74), Chandler White of the Aqua Aces of Stephenville (71), Johnathan Anderson of Gros Morne (51) and McAuley Bellows of the Corner Brook Rapids (48).
Jenny Stark of the Deer Lake Dolphins racked up 92 points to claim top honours in the 15 and Over female age group with Natasha Watkins of the Island Wahoos Swim Club finished in second with 81 and Jennifer Nelson, who isn’t attached to either local club, finished in third spot with 74. Kayla Crocker and Hollie Young, both of the Deer Lake Dolphins, finished with 66 points apiece, while Taylor Smith of the Corner Brook Rapids (64) snagged the final roster spot in the 15 and Over female division.
The roster for the 15 and Over male team is comprised of Ryan George of the Deer Lake Dolphins (95), Nicholas Sparkes of Corner Brook Rapids (88), Marcus Carter of Port aux Basques (74), Liam Carter of Port aux Basques (71), Jeffrey Anderson of Gros Morne (60) and Ben Thompson of Gros Morne (not available at press time).
