CORNER BROOK The Templeton Academy Tigers bowed out in the semifinal round at the provincial 3A boys slo-pitch softball championship in Corner Brook over the weekend.
The Tigers, based out of Meadows on the north shore of the Bay of Islands, played host to the six-team tournament with games being played at both Ambrose O’Reilly Memorial Field and Fred Basha Memorial Park.
The Tigers, who finished first in A Division with a record of three wins and one tie, were eliminated from medal contention with a 15-1 loss to White Hills Academy (3-1 record and 2nd in B Division) in one of two semifinal games played Saturday at Fred Basha Memorial Park.
The other semifinal matchup saw Heritage Collgiate (1st B Division with a 3-1 record) upend Pasadena Academy (1-2-1 and 2nd in A Division) by a 9-7 spread Saturday afternoon.
White Hills Academy won the gold medal with a 26-16 triumph over Heritage Collegiate in the championship final.
The Tigers opened the tournament by battlling Pasadena Academy to a 13-3 stalemate, but then won three games in a row to secure top spot in A Division — 12-6 and 20-7 victories over Mobile Central High and a 15-4 win over Pasadena Academy in the double round-robin format in two divisions.
Heritage Collegiate and White Hills Academy finished with identical 3-1 records in B Division, but Heritage Collegiate was awarded first place based on a tournament tie-breaking formula.
The St. Anthony squad’s only loss of the tournament came in a 18-7 loss to Heritage Collegiate. The boys from St. Anthony eked out a 9-8 win over Heritage Collegiate in the first meeting of the two schools.
Mobile Cental High finished at the bottom of the pack in A Division with a record of one win and three defeats.
Pearson Academy, last in B Division, couldn’t must a victory falling to defeat in four-straight games.
