Falcons soar to top spot at Elwood High boys basketball tourney

DEER LAKE  Mitch Snow drained 26 points to lead Pasadena Academy Falcons to a 93-63 win over Prince of Wales Collegiate in the championship game of the Elwood High boys invitational basketball tournament Saturday at Elwood High gymnasium.

Nick Pilgrim had a 25-point performance in the championship game for the Falcons, while Evan Blake supported the offensive attack with a 10-point game.

Deng Ring had 29 points for the St. John’s representative in the annual high school boys basketball tournament that featured teams from the west coast, Lewisporte, St. John’s and Gander.

The two finalists finished with identical 3-0 records in their respective divisions in round-robin play.

The Falcons downed Templeton Academy Tigers 44-18 in one of two semifinal matches with Nick Pilgrim leading the charge with a 26-point outing.

The following is a look at how things unfolded in round-robin games at the tournament:

Prince of Wales Collegiate 71, Lewisporte High 38

Deng Ring paved the way for the winners with a game-high 17 points on the hardwood.

Andrew Snow led the charge for Lewisporte High with seven points.

Templeton Academy 69, Lewisporte High 39

Patrick Brake had 23 points to lead the way for the winners.

Daniel King was the top scorer for the opposing side with eight points.

Gander Collegiate 70, Stephenville High 25

Blair Penney’s 18 points was the highlight of the game for the winners.

Tiuri Lomond drained 14 points for the Stephenville High representatives.

Prince of Wales Collegiate 62, Elwood High Lakers 56

Deng Ring had 25 points for the winners in an entertaining contest at Elwood High gym.

Andrew Moss collected 14 for the Lakers, while David Hardy threw in 10.

Pasadena Academy Falcons 67, Stephenville High 34

Nick Pilgrim (15), Evan Blake (14) and Richard Dugdill (14) shared the spotlight for the winners.

Andrew Patten had nine points to lead the scoring attack for the Spartans.

Corner Brook High 2 41, Gander Collegiate 38

Brady Cook had 12 points to lead the charge for the city squad.

Richard Malawny was the offensive star of the game with a 20-point performance for Gander Collegiate.

Elwood High Lakers 44, Lewisporte High 51

Phillip Owens was the top shooter for the winners with 10 points.

Andrew Moss had 20 for the Lakers, while benchmate Lucas Hoyles added 10 to the mix.

Corner Brook High 2 52, Stephenville High 25

Nick Purchase held the hot hand for the winners with 13 points.

Matthew Bennett had 14 for the Spartans.

Pasadena Academy Falcons 60, Gander Collegiate 31

Nick Pilgrim (18) and Mitch Snow (14) were the top guns for the Falcons.

Matthew Butt had 10 points to lead the charge for the Gander Collegiate entry.

Prince of Wales Collegiate 66, Templeton Academy 53

Deng Ring was the top scorer of the game with 29 points for the St. John’s squad.

Patrick Brake (21) and Kyle Blanchard (12) were the top performers for the Tigers.
