Titans stopped in semifinal round at Sweet 16 hoops tourney

ST. JOHN’S  — The Corner Brook High Titans were stoppped in the semifinal round in the quest for gold at the Sweet 16 Invitational boys basketball tournament in the capital city.

The Titans 4A boys hoops team lost 67-60 to Gonzaga High School of St. John’s in one of two semifinal matchups played Saturday.

Nathan Barker was player of the game for the Titans with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Graham Kenney had six points and 10 rebounds for the Corner Brook representatives, while Mark Rowsell threw in seven in a losing cause.

The Titans picked up two wins en route to the playoff round, opening the tournament with a 73-47 shellacking of Holy Heart Highlanders before downing Bishop’s High School of St. John’s 71-65 in overtime.

Chris Dobbin held the hot hand for the Titans in the win over the Highlanders with 13 points, while Chris Hughes — player of the game for the Titans — had nine points.

Nathan Barker and Francis Griffin had nine points apiece for the Titans in the opening win.

The Titans were led by Nathan Barker’s 25 points and 12 rebounds in an exciting overtime win over Bishop’s that saw the two teams deadlocked at 61-61 at the end of regulation time.

Chris Dobbin, player of the game for the Titans, has 14 points, 16 rebounds and eight blocked shots.

Daniel Humber threw in 10 points for the Titans.
