CORNER BROOK Jhoni Brake drained a game-high 18 points to lead St. Gerardâ€™s to a 28-27 victory over J. J. Curling in the gold-medal showdown at the Tiny Titans Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday at Corner Brook Regional High School.
Nathan Brake was the top scorer for the J. J. Curling Grade 6 squad with eight points.
St. Gerardâ€™s, who finished first overall in round-robin play in the Black Division, earned a berth in the final by virtue of a 34-22 triumph over J. J. Curling Grade 5s in semifinal play.
Brake was again a tower of strength with a 12-point outing, while Melissa Barker was a force on the hardwood with 10 points.
Scott Woolfrey was the offensive star for the opposing side with 12 points.
The J. J. Curling boys earned a spot in the final after downing Humber Elementary 33-32 in an exciting showdown that saw the two teams tied at 28-28 after regulation time.
Daniel Oâ€™Brien threw in 14 points to lead the charge for the victors.
Jacob Evoy was the top gun for the Humber Elementary entry with nine points.
In the consolation game featuring the two third-place teams after round-robin play, Pasadena Elementary shaded Xavier of Deer Lake 14-8 with Thomas Balsom and Damon Brake netting four points apiece.
Logan Hancock had four points to lead the Xavier boys.

St. Gerardâ€™s 26, J. J. Curling 20
Jhoni Brake poured in 18 points to lead the charge for St. Gerardâ€™s in the opening game of the tournament.
Brady Ruth, Logan Macrae and Michael McDonald had four points apiece in a losing effort.
Humber Elementary 33, Sacred Heart 15
Jacob Evoy (8) and Lucas Kelly (7) were the top shooters for the Humber Elementary squad.
Kyle Eddison drained 13 of the 15 points put on the board by the Sacred Heart entry.
Pasadena Elementary 22, C. C. Loughlin Grade 5s 20
Ethan Gogal had eight points for the winners.
Ben White shared the spotlight with an eight-point outing for the Loughlin Grade 5 entry.
J. J. Curling Grade 5s 14, Xavier 12
Luke Preston was the top peformer for the winners with six points.
Josh Janes had six in a losing cause for the Deer Lake entry.

Daniel Oâ€™Brien was a dominant force on the hardwood with 19 points for the winners.
Ethan Gogal had nine for the Pasadena boys.
