Gardner, Noseworthy take spotlight in Rowe’s ride to hoops title

CORNER BROOK  Julia Gardner and Sarah Noseworthy set the tone and the rest of the girls followed in fine fashion.

The two girls were instrumental in leading G. C. Rowe Junior High to their own Grade 7 female basketball invitational crown Saturday at G. C. Rowe Junior High gymnasium.

Gardner, named to the tournament all-star team, led the victors with a 10-point performance in a 47-19 triumph over crosstown rival Presentation Junior High in the final showdown.

Noseworthy, primarily a pass-first point guard who was named tournament Most Valuable Player, collected nine points in the championship game.

Chelsea Edison — winner of the tournament sportsmanship and ability award —had five points for the Presentation squad, while Katelyn Carey — also rewarded with an all-star selection — threw in four points.

The host Rowe girls went undefeated in round-robin play in a five-team tournament that also included Exploits Valley Intermediate ((2-2), Sacred Heart School (1-3) and Immaculate Heart of Mary School (0-4). Presentation earned a berth in the final by virtue of a 3-1 record in round-robin play.

Holly Mackey of Sacred Heart Elementary School, Hannah Peyton of Exploits Valley Intermediate and Maria Reynolds of Immaculate Heart of Mary School were also named to the tournament all-star contingent.

The following is a look at how things unfolded over the weekend at G. C. Rowe Junior High School gymnasium:

Presentation Junior High 38, Immaculate Heart of Mary School 24 (OT)

Katelyn Cleary scored eight of her 15 points in overtime for the win, while Ashley Parsons added seven points to the mix.

Maria Reynolds scored 10 points in a losing cause, while Hajra Ahmad poured in six.

G. C. Rowe 49, Exploits Valley Intermediate 17

Alex Williams and Alyssa Warford drained eight points apiece for the victors.

Hannah Peyton led Exploits with five, while benchmate Kira Roberts had four points.

Presentation Junior High 30, Sacred Heart School 10

Chelsea Edison poured in eight points to pave the way for the winners, while Hayleigh Young, Brianna Chaulk and Brooklyn Companion added four each.

Arianna Sheppard and Emma Welshman scored four points apiece for Sacred Heart.

Exploits Valley Intermediate 23, Sacred Heart School 12

Hannah Peyton scored eight points to lead the way for the winners, while teammate Hannah Butt threw in six.

Holly Mackey replied with four points in the loss, while Madison Hackett had three points.

Presentation Junior High 23, Exploits Valley Intermediate 20 (2OT)

In the tournament thriller that would ulimately decide who would play for gold, Chelsea Edison led the double-overtime triumph with eight points and Katelyn Cleary added six.

Hannah Peyton, once again, led Exploits on the hardwood with five points, while Melissa Howell had five points in a losing cause.

G. C. Rowe 62, Immaculate Heart of Mary School 14

Julia Gardner led her team to victory with an 11-point performance, while Alex Williams and Faith Rose both had eight points.

Maria Reynolds continued her scoring prowess with six points in a losing cause.

Exploits Valley Intermediate 38, Immaculate Heart of Mary School 25

Hannah Peyton scored a tournament-high 16 points in the win, while Chantal Mulrooney added eight to the scoring parade.

Maria Reynolds had 12 in a losing effort, while Hajra Ahmad added nine points to the scoresheet.

G. C. Rowe 53, Presentation Junior High 6

Adreia Coles led the scoring for the winners with 14 points, while Ashley Jacobs chipped in with eight points.

Katelyn Clearly had three points for the Presentation girls.

Sacred Heart School 34, Immaculate Heart of Mary School 30

Holly Mackey scored a tournament-high 16 points, a feat shared by Hannah Peyton of Exploits Valley Intermediate, while teammate Madison Hackett scored eight.

Hajra Ahmad poured in 10 in the loss, while Mackenzie Bishop added eight of her own.
