Spartans settle for silver on the hardwood in Deer Lake

Mallory Gillispie drained 16 points and Michaela Case poured in 10 as Carbonear Collegiate downed the Stephenville High Spartans 54-36 for the provincial 4A Tier 2 female basketball crown Saturday afternoon in Deer Lake.

Hannah Stokes and Katelyn Baker had nine points apiece for the Spartans as the 2014 provincial 4A Tier 2 Girls Basketball Tournament wrapped up at the Elwood High School gymnasium.

The Spartans advanced to the final after a 53-28 victory over the host Lakers in a semifinal matchup that saw Stokes lead the charge with a 30-point performance.

Olivia Janes was the top shooter for the Lakers with a 14-point outing, while benchmate Shannon Brown had three points.

The Lakers moved into the semifinal round after Jenelle Williams notched a 22-point game and Olivia Janes had nine points in a 59-49 victory over Exploits Valley High. Hilary Warford and Kelsey Jewer had nine points apiece for the Exploits Valley High girls.

Carbonear Collegiate earned a berth in the final by virtue of a 71-66 triumph over Holy Trinity High of Torbay in the other semifinal matchup Saturday morning.

Once again, Gillispie held the hot hand for the Carbonear entry with a 21-point outing and Emily Kennedy supported the cause with a 15-point effort on the hardwood.
