CORNER BROOK  Aaron Andrews shared in the medal haul for Team Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2014 Eastern Canadian Gymnastics Championships.

The gymnast out of Saltos in Corner Brook claimed the silver medal in rings in the Level 3, 13 and Over bracket at the showcase event held in Oshawa, Ont. Level 3 competitors in both gymnastics and trampoline took part in the event.

Andrews finished 19th overall out of 22 competitors with an All Around score of 66.6 for his participation in six apparatuses.

The 15-year-old gymnast was making his first trip to Easterns in four years. He wasn’t interested for a number of years, but this year decided he wanted to see how he stacks up.

Winning a silver medal against some some tough competition is something he’s certainly happy about.

“I think it’s pretty good knowing there’s people from Ontario and Quebec who trained a lot more than me and there’s a bigger population,” Andrews said of his performance.

He credits the move to a new facility as a key factor in his vast improvement on the rings over the past few months of training leading up to the journey to Oshawa.

“In our old gym I couldn’t do rings because my feet would hit the floor  and the cables are too short so my shoulders wouldbe taking all the absorption,” he said. “So, now that we have the new facility I can actually properly train on rings.”

The event marked the end of the competitive season for Andrews, but it won’t be a summer of taking it easy in the sun and sand with friends like others in his age group. He plays no other sports so he will be keeping up a busy training regime until it’s time to return to the gym again in the fall.

“I just keep on training,” he said. “Just work on new skills and have fun with it.”

Mount Pearl native Liam Jackman made history for the provincial team by winning the All Around title in the Level 3, 13 and Over division. He claimed gold in floor and silver in both pommels and high bar en route to winning the first-ever All Around title at the Eastern Canadian level for a gymnast from this province.

Abby Dolomount of St. John’s claimed silver in the All Around for athletes in the women’s national novice category.

Nicole Wicks, a Pasadena native who now trains with Saltos, was the only other member of the club to make the journey to the Eastern Canadians. She finished in 18th spot in the Level 3 senior category.
